Headline: EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION, HOME OF THE FREE, LAND OF THE BRAVE!!!
Author - Niko R.
Justification: The Emancipation Proclamation was the first document to declare that all slaves in the rebellious states were to be free. The emancipation was just the beginning of freedom for slaves everywhere.
Topic: President Abraham Lincoln had believed slaves should be emancipated from as early as 1849. Emancipation would advocate a program in which they/ slaves would be freed, Abraham Lincoln tried to win over legislators, by telling slave owners that they would be compensated for giving up their property, but he gained no support. On September 1862, after the Union's victory at Antietam, Lincoln issued an order stating that unless the rebellious states returned to the Union by January 1st, freedom would be granted upon the slaves within those states. The confederate states did not take the offer, so on January 1st, 1863 President Lincoln presented the Emancipation Proclamation. Not only did the Emancipation Proclamation freed some slaves in the United States but it also allowed black soldiers to fight for the Union, this also tied the issue of slavery directly to the war.
South: The Confederate states obviously did not like the idea of The Emancipation Proclamation. The Confederate states didn’t take the offer because they were gonna lose a big part of their money from not having slaves work for them, they would’ve also had to pay them. The Emancipation would weaken the Confederacy by cutting off the labor force. The south would’ve only had about 1 million slaves left since the emancipation freed 3.1 million of the 4 million slaves.
North: The Union gained more man power due to ex slaves wanting to fight for other freedom. They had a lot of ex slaves willing to help and even die for others. The Union had freedom and that is what the North really wanted, and they got it! Obviously the North would’ve viewed this as a win. The north would’ve felt superior, especially with a lot of ex slaves wanting to fight alongside with them.
