Headline - ATTACK ON NORTHERN SOIL
Author - Tyler P.
Justification - The Battle of Antietam was chosen because of how we thought that the role of it was very unique since this had been one of the first attacks on the Union States soil.
Topic - Battle of Antietam is about how Confederate general Robert E. Lee would attack Sharpsburg, Maryland against Union general George McClellan on Union soil for the first time. Robert E. Lee would create a plan that would win the attack against the Union forces, but the developed plan would soon get to George McClellan. This would give the Union a great advantage over the Confederates. However, George McClellan would not fully utilize the advantage he had. The result would eventually lead into a bloody war in which the Union would overwhelm Robert E. Lee’s Confederate army by attacking from left then right since Lee’s strategy was mostly defensive, but on very dangerous ground because of the Potomac River behind the battleground. Eventually, McClellan and his Union army would win the battle as this would become another Union victory put into history.
North Perspective - At the beginning of the Battle of Antietam, Union soldiers suffered heavy casualties as they were attacked on their own ground by Confederate soldiers. The Confederate army that was led by general Robert E. Lee would create a plan to finish off the Union army, but the plan got to the Union general, George B. McClellan. McClellan would use the advantage he had, but not fully. The Union general would create a plan to counter the Confederates, but failed to practice this method enough with his soldiers. The result would lead to heavy casualties as Union soldiers would surround the Confederate forces from left and right. However, the Union would push the Confederates into the Potomac River that would lead the Union States into victory.
South Perspective - Confederate general Robert E. Lee and his army would attack on northern soil for the first time for the Confederate States. As a result Lee’s army would attack against McClellan's Union army and create heavy casualties for McClellan’s army. Robert E. Lee would soon create a plan to get rid of the Union army, but for some how his plans got to George McClellan. Robert E. Lee and his Confederate army would be countered attacked and flanked from both left and right on the defensive ground his plan was built upon. His army would soon retreat and cause the Union States to achieve another victory while the Confederate States would achieve another failure.
