Headline - SUMTER HAS FALLEN
Author - Tyler P.
Justification - The Battle of Fort Sumter was chosen because of how we thought that the role of it was very unique since Fort Sumter had the first of shots of the American Civil War.
Topic - The Battle of Fort Sumter is about how Union soldiers stationed at naval base Fort Sumter surrendered to the Confederate States as their soldiers bombarded the fortress and eventually took control of it to station their own Confederate naval base on April 13, 1861. Those bombardments would be the first shots to start the bloody American Civil War. Fort Sumter was taken and first attacked by the Confederate States because of how the fort carried heavy artillery, weapons, bullets, and more. This would then help the Confederate States to fight against the Union with naval defenses during the American Civil War, but Fort Sumter would soon become reclaimed fours years later by the Union as they too would also bombard the fort in order to cease control.
North Perspective - The Union was first in control of Fort Sumter to help station naval defenses against the Confederate States, but soon surrendered when Confederate soldiers bombarded the fort. As a result the Union would not have a naval defenses in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina and the soldiers stationed there would be imprisoned, but in four years time, the Union would reclaim the fort from the Confederate States through bombardment. The Union would then have their naval defenses against the Confederate States during the American Civil War.
South Perspective - When Fort Sumter was attacked by the Confederate States through bombardment, it lasted only thirty four hours until Union soldiers surrendered to the Confederate soldiers. In the Confederate States point of view, they sought out to control the fort because of how the fort would become a strong naval base with the Confederate States more experienced soldiers and because of how the fort possessed heavy artillery, weapons, ammunition, and other supplies. After the Union soldiers were imprisoned, the Confederate States took great control of the fort. That was until four years later when the Union would reclaim Fort Sumter as the Confederate States would see this as a great loss and eventually leading the Confederate States to lose the American Civil War against the Union.
Modern Connection - If you think about it, the Battle of Fort Sumter is very similar to the San Bernardino shooting. With the San Bernardino shooting, people were killed in a safe place by the enemies of the United States. The terrorists came into the territory of the United States and killed people, while also having hostages. The Battle of Fort had Confederates attack the Union’s territory, killed soldiers, and had prisoners, similar to hostages. Anyway, because of the shooting, the United States stopped further terrorism and are now trying to create more gun laws to prevent this from happening again. With the Battle of Fort Sumter, the Union reclaimed Fort Sumter and created defenses to prevent another Confederate attack.
