Justification
This topic that I have chosen was important enough to include in the website because California was admitted as a free-state. It is also important because a new law was made which is the Fugitive Slave Law. Slave trade also started to be prohibited in certain places.
Topic
This article will be about the Compromise of 1850. Henry Clay, introduces the Compromise of 1850 in the Senate. By September of 1850, Henry Clay's Compromise became law. California was admitted to the Union as the 16th free state do to the compromise. The south was guaranteed that no federal restrictions on slavery would be placed on Utah or New Mexico in exchange of California being admitted as the 16th free state. They also wanted to end slave trade in Washington D.C. There was still slavery in the nation's capital but the slave trade was prohibited. Congress compensated Texas with $10 million because Texas lost its boundary claims in New Mexico. A law requiring northerners to return runaway slaves to their owners was made and that was the Fugitive Slave Law.
North Perspective
The Compromise of 1850 impacted the North in several ways including getting more free states, slave trade being prohibited in certain places, and winning boundaries. The state of California was admitted as a free state. Slave trade was prohibited in Washington D.C even though slavery still maintained. Texas ended up losing a boundary dispute with New Mexico which was a part of the North. Although, the North won the boundary Texas was still given $10 million due to that. Each side both the North and South received many benefits but the North gained more.
South Perspective
The Compromise of 1850 impacted the South in several ways including no slavery restrictions, slaveholding, Congress gave money to the South, and a new law. The South got no slavery restrictions in Utah or New Mexico territories. Slaveholding was also permitted in Washington D.C. The money that was given to the South by Congress was $10 million to Texas since it lost boundary claims to New Mexico. A Fugitive Slave Law was passed in the South. The fugitive Slave Law consisted of requiring northerners to return runaway slaves to their owners under penalty of law.
