Justification
This topic that I have chosen was important enough to include in the website because the North wanted Stephen Douglas as president and the South thought he was a traitor. Abraham Lincoln also ran for president and most states in the South did not vote for him because they wanted slavery. Lincoln wanted to abolish slavery.
Topic
The Democrats met in Charleston, South Carolina, in April 1860 to select their candidate for President in the upcoming election. The Republicans met in Chicago in May of 1860 and recognized that the Democrat's turmoil actually gave them a chance to take the election. Abraham Lincoln was from Illinois and he ran in the Republican Party. Lincoln also stated that slavery would not spread any farther than it already had. He wanted to enforce the Fugitive Slave Laws. He ran against John Cabell Breckinridge, a southern democrat from Kentucky, John C. Bell, from Tennessee and part of the Constitutional Union, and Stephen Arnold Douglas from Illinois and a northern Democrat.
North Perspective
Northern Democrats later met in Baltimore, Maryland, and nominated Stephen A. Douglas. Throughout the election Stephen A. Douglas failed the North and the North started respecting Abraham Lincoln and leaned more towards him. Breckinridge and Bell did not receive any votes in three Northern states. Some people in North still voted for Douglas, Douglas was actually the only candidate who got votes in every state during the election. Abraham Lincoln won the Election of 1860 which was good for the North because the North was Slavery free and all of the United States was soon gonna be Slavery free as well since Lincoln's mindset was to abolish slavery and to enforce Fugitive Slave Laws.
South Perspective
Abraham Lincoln received no votes in nine states in the South and was not even added to the ballot in some states. The South did not want slavery abolished so most of them voted for the Senator of Illinois Stephen A. Douglas. Out of 996 counties in the South Abraham Lincoln only won 2 of them. The South had a lot of slave owners and didn’t want slavery to be prohibited. Lincoln’s victory prompted South Carolina to secede from the United States. The outcome of the election was their last sting for them to secede since they were on the verge of doing so.

Modern Connection
The Election of 1860 is connected to the Election of 2012 because that was the first time ever in history that an African American Became president. This possibly would’ve never happened if Abraham Lincoln didn’t run for the president of the United States in 1860. Abraham Lincoln’s main focus was to enforce Fugitive Slave Laws and to abolish slavery. Abraham Lincoln ended up being one of the main people that helped abolish slavery. During the times of slavery slaves weren’t even allowed to vote and sometimes they weren’t even considered to be in the population a lot didn’t even know how to read since they didn’t need education. Barack Obama was able to run as president because of Abraham Lincoln becoming president and allowing future African Americans be able to rise up to better things such as getting an education and becoming president.
